Antonio Marras

Marras was born in Alghero, Sardinia, whose landscape continues to define his visual language. He started designed clothing, accessories and costumes in the late 1980s, founding his own fashion label in 1999. He also served as artistic director at Kenzo for eight years, appointed in 2003. Always experimenting within new territories, Marras also designs seating pieces, textiles, ceramics, wallpapers and decorative objects, collaborating with Sardinian craftspeople. Through his unique way of shaping forms, spaces and images, Marras is celebrated for his vision, sensitivity and originality.

Although primarily known for his work in fashion, Marras’ drawings, paintings, sculptures, installations and functional artworks reveal the artistic vision that predates his success in the fashion world. Driven by instinct over process, Marras’ artistic practice is led by a passion for recovering abandoned objects that carry histories, experiences and identities. A pioneer in upcycling, the artist applies principles of reuse and regeneration to creations ranging from collages to ceramics produced through a meticulous attention to craftsmanship. Through his artworks, Marras' stylistic register and creative urgency find bodies through which to express themselves.

Marras’ works of visual art and performance have been shown in institutions including Museo della Ceramica, FOQUS – Fondazione Quartieri Spagnoli, Palazzo Lanfranchi, Galleria Massimo Minini, PAC – Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Chiostri di San Pietro, Teatro Massimo Cagliari and Teatro Elfo Puccini. Marras was among the artists exhibited by the Italian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. The Triennale di Milano hosted the retrospective Antonio Marras: Nulla dies sine linea in 2016.

Marras received the Francesca Alinovi Prize (now Alinovi Daolio Prize) in 2001 and a Tao Award in 2020 and 2024. He was awarded an honorary degree in visual arts from Brera Academy in 2013. The monograph Antonio Marras (2007, Marsillo Editori) documents the designer's work through essays, interviews and lavish illustrations. Antonio Marras: Ten Years Later (2006, Corriani Edizioni) celebrates Marras’ career and includes sketches by the artist himself.
