Robert Stadler Solid Doubts

Like Noguchi, Paris-based, Austrian designer Robert Stadler (b. 1966) is a category-defying artist whose work comes from a place where conceptual, aesthetic, functional, and material considerations meet. ‘Solid Doubts’, co-curated by Stadler and Noguchi Museum Senior Curator Dakin Hart, presents four distinct installations—three in the galleries, one in the sculpture garden—that display Stadler’s and Noguchi’s work in tandem in order to raise as many aesthetic, functional, and philosophical questions as possible. In so doing, it reveals the resistance of both men’s work—functional (table, mirror, lamp, bench) and sculptural—to labels and categories.

‘Solid Doubts: Robert Stadler at The Noguchi Museum’ represents the Museum’s ongoing engagement with contemporary artists of all disciplines, illuminating the scope of Noguchi’s vision and his continuing impact on our culture. It is the Museum’s first exhibition to feature a contemporary designer’s work in dialogue with Noguchi’s sculptures and designs.

‘Solid Doubts: Robert Stadler at The Noguchi Museum’ will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with texts by Joseph Becker, Associate Curator of Architecture and Design, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; design writer Emily King; and Mr. Hart. The 120-page publication will also include installation photography—shot by a drone—and schematic renderings and conceptual collages of the works on view. It will be available in late May 2017.
