In 1973, Nakashima established himself as a pioneer of the American craft movement when he designed over 200 pieces for Nelson Rockfeller, combining traditional Japanese carpentry with American and Modern styles. His furniture is characterised by a contrast between smooth surfaces and deliberately unfinished edges.
