Kayo Saito creates delicate and sculptural jewellery from precious metals, influenced by the fragility and energy of plants. She cherishes often overlooked miracles of nature, as simple as a flower bud opening or a dry leaf curling up, each a moment of poignant beauty. Her unique approach is a hybrid of Japanese and European goldsmithing techniques, as she trained metal working in Japan and then completed her Masters at the Royal College of Art, London.

This collection evokes Haiku poetry and the beauty of Japanese calligraphy. Haiku is a short three-line Japanese poem that uses sensory language to capture a feeling or image. Rings resembling leaves, and bracelets and earrings modelled on seedpods compose a three-jewellery-piece poem, combining 18-carat gold, silver and black rhodium metals. As in nature, Saito builds her pieces from repetitive elements that expand organically. The layering of each element brings energy and movement to the final piece, creating highly decorative ornaments that closely fit the body’s form.

Artist Biography

Kayo Saito, who studied metalwork at Japanese art college and finished a masters at the Royal College of Art in 2001, is influenced by nature. Fragility, poetry, organic forms and the energy of plants arouse her creativity and fulfil her aesthetic sense.
