The Campana Brothers experimented with leather fragments in the studio to understand the material’s possibilities and limitations. Once those characteristics were understood, they eventually transformed the fragments into something concrete by applying them to the desired structure with their own hands.

The results were seemingly random ensembles created out of the scraps of leather. The chairs were loosely clad in an irregularly overlapping patchwork of bits of leather in multiple colors and patterns. The clever method of accumulation that worked so well in the brothers’ earlier body of work went one step further to shock and amuse—the peeling upholstery.

Artist Biography

Co-founded in 1984 by brothers Fernando (1961–2022) and Humberto (1953) Campana, the Campana studio has gained international recognition for its innovative furniture and experimental design. Celebrated as a pioneer of disruptive design, the studio has established a groundbreaking visual language and, over four decades of practice, continues to shape the field.
