Flying in the face of tradition and rebelling against lofty art historical concepts often taken too seriously, Léa Mestres deliberately choses a humorous, light and playful approach. Crafted from cement and plaster, Jessy is coloured a bright pink. The materials and size lend an architectural quality, but the work is also personified, anthropomorphic and imbued with personality. The life-size dimensions are the result of the artist’s playing with scale and volume, as she delights in the ridiculousness that accompanies disproportion.

Artist Biography

Léa Mestres is an experimental French artist who seeks to counter a design world that she sees as too serious and too male-dominated. She uses play, humour and whimsy as aesthetic devices to create colourful, anthropomorphic, larger-than-life sculptures that act as windows into the artist’s vivid imagination.
