Martin Laforêt’s Variations collection is built upon a standardised central concrete element, from which he spontaneously builds outwards. Each object is unique, made inevitable by the casting imperfections in each concrete mould combined with the artist’s experimental approach.

Symmetry and a two tone colour scheme give each chair in the Variations collection a sense of continuity within the eclectic series. In contrast to usual design practices, which often conceal any sign of methodology for the sake of a finished aesthetic, Laforêt has developed a language that unveils and scrutinises the constructive process. In short, Laforêt thinks of design as a "unified whole", an entanglement of form, material, process and technique, that he constantly deconstructs.

Artist Biography

Martin Laforêt is a French designer based between Paris and Audierne who aims to bring out the specific personality of materials and produce original forms. Drawn to objects related to the fields of sculpture, industry and architecture, his personal expression is inspired by his interest in shapes and material combinations.
