Gareth Mason

Born in Pembroke, Wales, and now based in Hampshire, England, Mason’s career trajectory developed steadily through group and solo exhibitions in the UK and Europe. His first solo show in the US was at Jason Jacques Gallery in New York in 2011. Numerous international events and exhibitions followed, including artist residencies at Long Beach State University, Jingdezhen International Studio and Syracuse University. His collaboration with Carpenters Workshop Gallery began in October 2023 with the solo exhibition Seeing Things at Ladbroke Hall.

For Mason, metamorphosis is the force unfolding in all stages of his interventions. Wheel-throwing, free-form constructing and multiple-firing collaborate to imbue his sculptural vessels with an expressive, energetic character and an almost tectonic friction. Although his work gestures to more-than-human forces, the absurd and mysterious personalities of clay remain free to ultimately provoke the imagination.

Mason's work has been exhibited in institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hangzhou International Contemporary Ceramics Biennale, Fitzwilliam Museum, Centre Tignous and Yale Centre for British Art, and at international art fairs including TEFAF Maastricht, Design Miami, PAD London and Design Miami Paris. His work is also included in prestigious permanent collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Everson Museum of Art, The Mint Museum, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Mason is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and Brother of the Art Workers' Guild. The artist’s books include A Decade In Cahoots (2020, Jason Jacques Press) and More is More (2014, Jason Jacques Press), while he also features in books such as Contemporary British Studio Pottery by Ashley Thorpe (2023, The Crowood Press).
